Welcome to our class web page which includes everything necessary to be well informed!
"We could all learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names and all are different colors...but they all have to learn to live in the same box.”
-Andy Rooney
Dear Parents,
If you were unable to make it to Back to School Night, here's some of the good stuff you may have missed:
Homework Policy:
Homework will be listed in Schoology for each day of the week (Monday through Thursday). There will be either a ReadTheory.com story or fluency passage for your child to read and questions to answer (to build both fluency and reading comprehension skills) and/or Amplify to work on for 10-15 minutes (see assignment for your day's time goal). In addition to this, a lesson in Zearn, as well as a daily math assignment need to be completed. The math Succeed page will need to be uploaded into Schoology on that day. Your child should also read for at least ten to fifteen minutes each day. Full credit is given when all homework is completed, directions are followed, and work is submitted. ReadTheory is leveled according to your child’s ability (as assessed in the initial placement test) and should be completed independently. Annual projects include weekly book reports (Book It! [weekly log download at bottom of page] starts in October and sign up will begin closer to the end of September - contact me if you need help signing up), Science Fair (?), and Multicultural Fair (?). Each child is expected to complete all reading logs and at least one other project. Information will be shared in regard to these other projects when I know more about what that will look like this year.
Grading Policy:
Report cards will include 4, 3, 2, and 1 (Academic Achievement: 4 is Advanced, 3 is Proficient, 2 is Partially Proficient, and 1 is Not Proficient; Effort, Work and Study Habits, Learning and Social Skills: 4 is Strong, 3 is Consistent, 2 is Inconsistent, 1 is Poor). Grades are based on class work quality, participation, effort, homework and tests. Test dates are given in advance both orally in class and on the weekly newsletter to ensure that students are aware of upcoming tests. Language Arts tests and math tests are usually administered at least two to three times per month. Progress Reports are sent home half way through the grading period to allow time for students to bring up their grade(s). Why wait for the progress report? I have begun using Schoolology and continue to learn being more proficient on it. If you would like to check your child's grades you can! You need to sign up on our Parent Portal (linked here) first. It is there that you will have access to grades, old report cards, attendance, etc. If no one in your family has signed up, please do! Here's a link to a step-by-step video for how to sign up if it would be helpful.
Mailbox Thursday:
Each student will empty his/her mailbox each Thursday. This will happen weekly. Among the papers sent home will be the Weekly Conduct Report, all graded class work, tests, information, letters from me, or announcements from the school. Please look through them each week and return any response items (particularly the Weekly Conduct Report) the following day. Occasionally, some school paperwork requires immediate attention. These papers will be sent home independently of the Mailbox Thursday.
Class Work:
The class work policy is designed to help students keep up with assignments given in class. When class assignments are turned in, work is graded, recorded, and sent home. When assignments are missing or not complete, I note the assignment on the board and put their student number next to it, to remind them that they need to complete it and submit it to me. They have roughly two weeks to complete all classroom assignments before it is permanently marked missing. If the number of missing assignments within that two week period does not improve, they may be asked to stay in for 10 minutes of recess. The student may also be given additional help by our classroom aide, asked to stay after school with me (with parental permission), or work may be sent home to be completed. If recess is taken away to complete a quick in class assignment that was not done, only 10 minutes of the 20 minute recess will be used.
Our units of study include science (Next Generation Science Standards); social studies (Geography and Mapping Skills; People, Places, and Environments; Economics: People Who Supply Our Goods and Services; Families Today and In the Past; and Biographies: People Who Make a Difference); health (topics vary from year to year, Sanford Harmony); and language arts (Government at Work, Characters Facing Challenges, Plants and Animals in their Habitats, Many Characters, Many Points of View, Solving Problems Through Technology, Tales to Live By, Investigating the Past, Wind and Water Change Earth, Buyers and Sellers, States of Matter).
PTA Plug:
PTA does so many things to support our school. They provide 2 buses per grade level each school year so we can go on a field trip, they pay for half the cost of our computer classes, as well as provide art education. There are many behind the scene events they provide as well such as family movie night, pajamarama, and offer scholarships to families for a variety of needs. If you haven't already joined the PTA it is only $8 and you may also be interested in becoming a part of the fundraiser campaign. You can donate as little as $5 each month for 10 months or up to any amount on an ongoing 10 month maximum basis. You can also make a one-time donation as well. DECA dues, membership, and yearbook orders can all be made here (with no additional fees).
Parties and Volunteerism:
We will only have two official parties this year: winter and end of the year. We will have other fun activities that you may want to be a part of like our Pumpkin Math/carving that leads into our Fall Festival, The Feast (Friday before Thanksgiving with arts, crafts, and [yep] a feast), Valentine Math, Breakfast with Dr. Seuss, as well as other events here and there. If you want to send in some goodies to help celebrate your child's birthday you MUST contact me first. Do NOT just send in something to be passed out. School policy states it should be a small gift of some sort (pencil, eraser, tattoo, key chain toy, etc.) and passed out the last 2 minutes of the school day. If you would like to volunteer in our classroom on a regular basis, or for special activities, as well as go on field trips, you MUST have a volunteer form on file and reapply EVERY year. The website uses PopUp windows so you must disable any PopUp blockers. These can also be obtained through our school website. The TB test only needs renewal every four years. Continuing this year you must make an appointment to be fingerprinted. These appointments can be made through our front office. LAUSD is adding another layer of protection around your child.
It is my goal to keep an open door of communication regarding your child and his/her progress throughout the year. This will be done through the Weekly Conduct and Work Habits Report (WC&WHR), notes, emails, phone calls, and conferences. Most school bulletins will be sent home in an electronic backpack to the email address on file with the school. Graded papers, classroom bulletins, and the WC&WHR will be sent home on Thursday when students will empty mailboxes. You need to sign the WC&WHR and return the form (with protective sleeve) on Friday. Please help your child successfully return this each Friday so we can use them throughout the school year. If you have any questions or concerns you can email me at [email protected]. I will also be available after school (not Tuesdays) if you would like to stop by. Please phone school at (818) 349-4381, or send a note/email in advance so that I can set aside a sufficient amount of time for our meeting.
Our classroom discipline plan observes and incorporates the following school rules:
1. Be Responsible.
2. Be Respectful.
3. Be Safe.
4. Be Your Best!!!
Difficulty following class rules will be noted (after 3 warnings) on the WC&WHR sent home each Thursday for you to review with your child. Please ask your child for clarification before contacting me. Occasionally your child may write a letter to you explaining some difficulty that was experienced during the school day. Please be sure to sign the note and return it the next school day. If behavior becomes excessive a phone call will be made home. If the behavior continues, I will send home a note requesting a conference. For positive reinforcement of good behavior, I have a prize box, tickets awarded, high fives, verbal praise, and various other incentives.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Radosevich
Do remember to sign all the paperwork that is sent home. It is much easier if it can be signed and returned the following day. I give this responsibility to your child by explaining what needs to be signed, allowing him/her to ask for your signature, and show responsibility by bringing everything back. Feel free to help your child be more successful by asking prompting questions like, “Is there anything I need to see from school today?” or “Where should that go after it is signed to make sure it will be returned successfully tomorrow?” One of our second grade goals is to help each child be responsible (see the rules up above) for returning papers, meeting due dates, and exhibiting appropriate behavior.
